  • Kyle Thurston — 3.6 steals, 6 assists. 1st Team All-League, Greater St. Helens.

  • Zack Bjork - 5 Reb.

  • Coach Long — 16 years Head Coach at Columbia River, record of 271-171. Coach Long has guided the Chieftains to 8 state tournament appearances. Finished 5th in 1997, 8th in 2004, and a school beast 3rd place in 2005. Notable players who have gone on to play Division 1 basketball include: Lane O’Connor University of Hawaii ‘97, Brett Pierce Stanford University and currently in the NFL ’99, Zack Moritz, currently playing for Boise State ’06.

  • Coach Long has coached tennis at Columbia River as well as Lake Oswego High School. His seven year record at Lake Oswego was 9702 with two state titles. Coach Long is currently the Head Golf coach at Columbia River as well.

  • Columbia River returns their top three scorers off of last year’s league and district championship team. This team upset state contender Mercer Island in the first round of the State Championships last year, eventually bowing out to state runner-up Lakes High School from Tacoma. University of Nevada bound and All-State big man, Steve Bjornstad 6’10” is expected to be the focal point of the Chieftains offensive and defensive attack. All-League sharp shooting guard Kyle Thurston 5’10”, will be expected to carry much of the scoring load from the perimeter, with 6’6” swing man Zack Bjork will add points from a variety of spots on the floor. Watch for crafty point guard Connar Oberst to add some highlights to every game. You will see a mix of styles from this team. The Chieftains can and will get out and run the floor when break opportunities present themselves, but watch for tempos to change quickly into their disciplined offensive attack if high percentage shots are not available.

  • Coach Long is helped out on the bench b y his father, Sonny Long. Sonny was the long time basketball coach (36 years) at Lake Oswego High School, and is one of Oregon’s all-time winningest coaches. David Long’s JV coach, Jim Sevall, was coach Long’s college tennis coach at the University of Idaho. In fact all four coaches on the Chieftain staff, Sonny Long, David Long, Jim Sevall and Todd Bingham attended the University of Idaho.

  • Connar Oberst, Chieftains starting point guard, has been battling cancer for the past six years. He is undergoing chemotherapy treatments, and has missed games due to surgeries. He has a special relationslhipo with NBA great Shaquille O’Neal. They are buddies. They stay in contact every month. Connar and his family go to all of Shaq’s games in Portland and meet with him after the games. Shaq is going to try and make a home game of Connar’s this season to watch his little buddy play his senior season.
